What is EN54-12 Standard: Beam Detector with Optical IR Light

Beam detector, also known as optical line detector, is a smoke sensor device that is often used in high ceiling buildings, warehouse or open area for fire protection. EN54-12 standard states that all products on the market in Europe should meet the requirement listed below (not exhaustive):

Compliance
The product needs to be produced in accordance to the specified obscuration, vibration, EMC, operational burst, sensitivity, path length dependence, directional dependence requirement, etc.

Alarm Indicator
Each detector must have a LED indicator.

Ancillary Connection

Circuit failures of ancillary products such as relays or remote indicators should not interfere with normal operation of beam detector.

Default Setting
The manufacturer’s setting cannot be altered, except via specials means such as codes or tools.

Ingress Protection

The device should be designed that protects the components inside.

Fault Signaling
The alarm should not be cancelled due to fault signals.

However, above mandatory requirement does not cover beam detectors that are intended to operate with opposing components less than 1m, nor devices with optical path length adjusted by an mechanical connection.
