What is UL 217 10th Edition Standard for Smoke Alarm – Comparison and Key Changes

The latest UL 217 10th edition and ULC 531 5th edition is expected to come into effect in July 2027. It is the latest safety standard governing the testing, performance and certification of smoke alarms. The new standards allows for regulatory clarity and harmonization across US and Canada.

Background
The requirements in the 8th and 9th edition of both fast-flaming fire detection and slow smoldering fires are also included in the latest UL 217 10th edition. This dual flaming detection helps the smoke detector to respond quickly to modern fire conditions.

Key changes
The key changes in the latest UL217 proposal is the alignment with the harmonized standards of Canada UL 531 5th ed. New fire tests will be added for the Canadian counterpart, to meet the stringent tests required in the US.

Ambiguities in the test methods & documentations are clarified in this new edition.

Low Frequency audibility requirements are also added for smoke alarms that use output types.

This ensures that manufacturers and companies can have a streamlined and smooth certification process for covering the whole North American market, removing repetitive testing barriers. To add a US-listed smoke alarm onto the Canadian market, the manufacturer would only need to have a simple review and add French language onto the Marking and Manual.

Below is a breakdown comparison between the latest editions:
