What is AS3786 Australia Standard for Smoke Alarm & Detector

AS3786 Australia Standard for Smoke Alarm: What is Required

AS3786 edition 2014 is the mandatory standard for smoke alarm in Australia, specifying the requirements of applicable detection devices using scattered light or ionization principles.

The newest edition is 2014, which supercedes the old 1993 edition introduced by CSIRO, recognized by the Building Code of Australia.

The main difference of AS 3786 from European EN 14604 and ISO 12239 is slight variance to service disconnect facility, markings, corrosion test, EMC, sensitivity, sounder durability & electrical safety.

All manufacturers have to conform to above standard and listed in CSIRO’s ActiveFire scheme in order to be eligible to sell the fire detector in the market.

For the third-party certification, the product should meet the requirement below:

  • Design & construction– the product will be evaluated on its design & shape.

  • Function– The device under test will be placed in smoke tunnel to check its sensitivity. It will also need to meet specified electrical characteristics, false alarm resistance & sound volume.

  • Durability– This includes environmental testing of SO2, vibration, dry heat, damp heat & cold resistance.

  • Packaging– The package needs to contain mandatory labels, instruction & materials to properly inform the user & ensure the authenticity of its compliance.

  • Electrical Safety– This involves tests regarding temperature & electrical shocks, as specified by AS/NZS 60065 clause.

  • Radiation– This test is only applicable to ionization smoke detector types.

For installation, the compliant smoke alarm should meet the following requirement:

  • in working condition
  • Has not been installed for more than 10 years, unless it is connected to mains power
